Leadership and Political Participation in Developing Countries

Political elites play important political positions and have great influence on cultural formation and national unity processes. Their positions and power are often based on other people's trust and loyalty. The multiple approaches used by political elites had a significant impact on people's transparency and willingness to accept their power and leadership. Most new governments did not recognize existing institutions after emancipation, for example in Latin America, indigenous communities were denied rights and oppressed by new rulers, African new governments consisted mainly of modern urban ruling elites trained in the West, put no focus on local traditions and excluded traditional leaders from formal political systems. However, traditional rulers still play an important role in many nations, even though the bulk of their population is no longer traditional and is ruled by a national democratic government.
